The weather was fine all day although there were some clouds threatening rain. The day started off briskly as most people who were offered leaflets took them. Barry spoke to P, a local man originally from the South. On being offered a leaflet, he said he was a Christian and was baptized as a teenager (he was probably in his 70's). Asked if he was going on with the Lord, he replied "Well, not really... I married a Catholic and that constantly stresses me". I related the modern "parable" of the coal fire where one of the coals falls onto the hearth. After a while it would stop burning, but when picked up with tongs and replaced on the fire it catches light and the whole fire then burns brightly, each coal having an effect on the others. Just so, we need the fellowship of other believers to encourage us, befriend us and pray for us. P listened and then accepted the booklet "On the Right Track", which has extracts from John's Gospel and the Book of Romans.
Barry spoke to M, a Catholic lady who knows a lady from Risedale Gospel Hall, Barrow (where I go). She wouldn't take a leaflet, but her 20 something friend or daughter (also a Catholic) took a "Reason to Believe" leaflet.
Barry spoke to D (perhaps in his 50's) whom I have spoken to on the last two previous Shows. He said he had read everything I had previously given him and had agreed with everything and was "totally on board" with the Christian message. When I asked him if he had ever prayed and asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of his sins and become his Lord and Saviour - he replied "No". At first he said he had no time for "regrets" and trusted God to forgive him at the final Day of Judgement...for the good works he does as a Carer. When I said we only have the opportunity to ask for forgiveness in this life-not later, when it will be too late he replied that I had given him something "to think about". He accepted an "ON the Right Track" booklet. He was very friendly and open to being challenged about his beliefs/spiritual condition.
David spoke to 3 young girls who were having fun with the Guessing Box. Unfortunately, they knew absolutely nothing about the Bible. They did, however take "Josh and Jade" children's leaflets.
David spoke to 3 young (10 year-olds?) boys who were trying the Guessing Box. He was able to spend some time talking with them. They knew the significance of the things found in the Box, such as the basket, cup and cross. As they left David gave them some "Josh and Jade" leaflets.
I met a young man who was baptized last year and did appear to be a "born again" Believer. (His Dad was a Pastor at an Ulverston) . David met others from this church (Emmanuel) who were encouraged by our witness.
David spoke to an 11 year-old girl and 2 younger boys as they tried the Guessing Box. The girl knew about the significance of the cup and basket, but thought "the sheep went into the boat with Jesus" (confusing with the Ark). She was not sure why Jesus died upon the cross. David gave her a "Meet the King" leaflet and the two lads took "Josh and Jade".
Overall it was a good day-many taking leaflets in the morning, but after 2.30 things started to slow down with fewer accepting tracts. God was favourable to us with the rain holding off. Thanks to God for all those who prayed for us and the witness given at the Show - and thank you to all those fellowships and individuals who remembered us before God. When seeds go into the ground it is often the darkest and coldest time of the year, and it appears very unpromising. We trust that as we plant spiritual seeds that God will cause them to germinate as others water them knowing and believing that God's word "will not return empty" (Isaiah 55:11).
