David McCombe Locke

posted 3 Oct 2009 15:39 by Stephen Hind

David passed into the presence of the Lord after a life of service as an Evangelist.

Much of his work was in association with Cumbria Gospel Outreach and started in 1974 with caravan and minibus in Coniston, working alongside Bryan Smith. Despite a wet “Lake district summer” was back in to county the following year, moving down to Walney after a return visit to Coniston.

So began a partnership with CGO, which lasted until his death on September 25th 2009. Thirty five years of service with a variety of different evangelists, different locations, different caravan sites, different assemblies and different activities – BUT always with the same message of saving grace, the same equable nature and the same loving concern for the assemblies in Cumbria.

The early 90’s heralded a change in the style of operation for CGO, with concentration on agricultural shows and markets and it is a credit to David’s adaptability that he continued in this work for almost 20 years

His move to Workington has been a great help to the assembly there and he will be sadly missed both by the believers in Workington and also by us all at CGO.

On behalf of CGO may I express our gratitude not only for David’s work with the Van but also to his wife Jeanette and the family for their sacrificial support over the years.

"The Annual Fellowship Rally for Cumbria Gospel Outreach this year, was hosted by the Christians meeting at Risedale Gospel Hall in Barrow-in-Furness.

Led by CGO Chairman, John Heron, with reports from Eric Bouch and David Johston to bring us up to date, we were pleased to have David Ryder ministering in song. Mr John Campbell from Carlisle reminded us, from Galations 5v1, of our freedom in Christ and our need to "stand firm in it" His ministry was muchappreciated as was the hospitality of the the folk in Barrow, to whom we say a big 'Thank You"

John Stanley Knight

posted 8 Feb 2009 06:28 by Stephen Hind

A celebration for the life of John was held in Penrith on February 4th.  Although known latterly for his work in spreading the Gospel via radio and the internet from studios in Penrith John’s involvement with Cumbria goes back to a time when Cumberland and Westmorland still existed as counties, in fact to 1948. When as a young Evangelist he spent the summer months working with the “van”.

His full impact on the county and local churches will only be revealed in eternity but many of us have happy memories of an energetic and gifted preacher and teacher.  From Bible Schools at Silloth, childrens’ meeting, open air preaching, tent campaigns in villages throughout the county, John’s mission to preach the word has been an example and stimulus to many of us.

In the late 60’s John’ attention turned increasingly to radio work and his recorded addresses have been heard in many parts of the world.  Never a sluggard when it came to new technology John embraced internet opportunities and has had the joy, before his death of seeing the work of Radio Outreach become accessible worldwide through the web.

We shall miss his involvement with the county and I’m sure the folk meeting at the Gospel Hall in penrith will miss him also.

With thanks to God for a faithful brother.
